All About the National Letter of Intent

What is the National Letter of Intent?

When a student-athlete signs the National Letter of Intent (NLI) he/she agrees to attend the designated college for one academic year. Signing the National Letter of Intent also prohibits participating universities from continuing to recruit the athlete. Also included in the National Letter of Intent signing terms is the college or university's agreement to provide an athletics scholarship for one a academic year, given that the athlete is admitted to the college and is eligible for financial aid under NCAA rules.

The NCAA began its National Letter of Intent program in 1964 with seven conferences and eight independent institutions. Years later, the National Letter of Intent program has grown to include 612 Division I and II universities.


Do I have to sign the National Letter of Intent?

No, it's not mandatory to sign the National Letter of Intent. The National Letter of Intent is a voluntary program for universities and prospective athletes or parents. Athletes are not required to sign the National Letter of Intent, and no institution is required to join the program. Why sign the National Letter of Intent?

First of all, a high school athlete is assured an athletic scholarship for one full academic year after signing the National Letter of Intent. In addition to receiving a scholarship, the student creates a binding relationship with the college or university, not just the coach or athletic program. This ensures both an academic as well as an athletic future for the athlete who signs the National Letter of Intent.
