About Gilbert III Talbot

Gilbert III is a 30-Year-Old Grad. at Ellender Memorial High School in Houma, Louisiana. He is a multi-sport athlete who participates in Baseball and Basketball.

My name is Gilbert J. Talbot III, I answer to the name “Gibby”. Since I was about five years old I played only baseball. When I was eight years old I began to play travel baseball until the age of twelve. My last year I was inducted to The American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.. This was an honor I will deeply cherish. I tried playing baseball at the first school I attended but things didn’t work out to well so I thought I would give basketball a try but that also didn’t work out well either. No one wanted to teach me the game and I didn’t know much about basketball since I never played it as a youth before. So my ninth grade rolled around and both sports really weren’t working out at this school so I ask my parents to let me try AAU basketball in March of 09. We knew of a coach who had been trying to get me to play for him since I was about ten years old. So in March we looked up Coach Hoesa’ Chatman of The Louisiana Eagles AAU Basketball team. He was retired from AAU, but he said he would come back for this challenge in teaching me the game. I couldn’t even dribble a basketball all I knew was that the ball was round. So in March of 09 my real learning of this game begin. First he brought me to a court and work me out; I thought I was going to die. We ran, we shot, we ran, and ran some more. Not only I had no skills, I knew nothing about the game. But what he saw was a kid that wanted to learn, one that was hungry for knowledge at least this is what he said he seen in me. So Coach Hoesa’ began to build a team around me. Teammates that help to teach me the game and learn I did. Through my team’s help I began to learn.
I transfered to Ellender High School of Houma, la. For the 09-10 school year. I made the basketball team for that season. This was another high point in my athletic career Ellender has a long basketball tradition and to make this team was truly an honor. My new coach Scott Gauthreaux really open my eyes to what hard work was all about. I can truly say that I could see myself improving every single day. This season everyone on this team became my coach teaching me what to do and when to do it. This was my lesson on how and what a team is. This season we also captured the district title and went onto the third round of the state playoffs where we lost a close game. Again I learn another lesson that season, I was asked how many points I had for that season and it was only a total of 26 points and when my coach heard this he gave me the best advice about that. It’s not about how many points you have at the end it’s about W’s and L’s this is what carry’s a team on. It’s doing the best you can do to help your team get the W and not the L. And this is the way I begin to look at this game.
In 10-11 season, I played another year of AAU for the Louisiana Eagles and I began to notice a lot of interest from other teams and college coaches. Sure I was asked by many other to play for them but there this thing that was taught to me early on by my father and grandfather about loyalty. Now back in high school at Ellender we prepared for our 10-11 basketball season, I became a starter for this season. We played 32 games this season my stats improved through our hard work my season total was 420 pts... I had a 14 pts. Per game, 10.4 rebounds per game, and I shot 75% from the field. This could only be achieved through my teammates and their hard work in working with me for this season. And for those who left Ellender in the 09-10 season they still come back to coach me for practices and for the games. Even some that played years before me come to help me. This is with tradition and teamwork to me is all about now. We captured the Runner-up for district title and we lost in the third round again to the number one in the state by six points. But Ellender will be back stronger and better next season because that’s tradition at Ellender High School.
And now AAU basketball begins and another chapter of basketball and I’ll keep you informed!
