For a decade now, Major League Baseball has been living in fear of the really big doping bombshell. The owners and players and union and sponsors wouldn't admit it, of course, but inside, they knew it was possible. They tried to persuade themselves and an often submissive press corps and the game's millions of fans that the Big One was Mark McGwire, or Rafael Palmeiro, or Barry Bonds. And, in each case, they could console themselves with the notion that all three of those players, like the home runs they hit, were either going, or already gone.
