About cara salazar

cara is a 30-Year-Old Grad. at Pojoaque Valley High School in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She currently focuses on one sport, Volleyball.

My name is Cara Salazar and I am currently a senior at the Pojoaque Valley High School. There are many things that define me as a person. Dedication, perseverance, and cooperation are traits that I have tried to use in my daily life. Volleyball has been the sport that I have been most able to demonstrate those traits. In the six years that I have played the sport I have learned valuable life skills that I use over the course of a lifetime. I have also had a lot of accomplishments in the sport over those years. I hope that I have the opportunity to continue playing the sport that I love, while growing academically.
My career as an athlete began when I was eight years old playing Basketball. I also played softball during the times that I was not involved with Basketball. Playing these two sports since age 8 had given me the life and athletic skills that only sports can provide. I went to a local Volleyball camp before starting my 7th grade year and decided that I wanted to play this interesting sport. I began playing volleyball in 2006 in the 7th grade at the Pojoaque Valley Junior High School. After playing the first game I had an immediate attraction to the sport. In my first year of playing the sport we had a successful season, and was able to earn an all tournament player award. This began my career in the sport of Volleyball.
In the Volleyball off-season I kept up my involvement with the sport by participating in the Junior Olympics Volleyball Program. I have remained an active athlete in the program since I began the Junior Olympics in 2007. I have had a knack and skill in playing the libero position since I started in the program. The teams I have played with in the club volleyball programs have had much success, and have won numerous tournaments. The club teams that I have played with have competed with other teams across the Southwest. In many of these matches we have played and defeated teams in older age groups. The skills that I have acquired as a libero and defensive specialist through this program over the course of eight years have made me a quality Volleyball player. I had the unique experience to travel to play Volleyball in Europe on two separate occasions in 2008. I was a member of the United States team for my age group in a tournament held in Austria through the People to People Sports Ambassadors Program. I was also a member of the United States team for my age group in the tournament held in Rome through the 365 Sports Program. At the conclusion of the 365 Sports Program tournament I was selected as a top player from the United States to play in an the “All Worlds Team” exhibition team. These are my non-school sponsored Volleyball experiences and successes that have made me into the Volleyball player that I am today.
In 8th grade I began playing competitive High School Volleyball in Pojoaque Valley on the Junior Varsity team as the Libero. Our team won the District Championship for 5-3A, after the conclusion of a successful season as the teams top defensive player. In 2008 I was a starting player for the Varsity team as a freshman in the role of defensive specialist. In 2009 I continued to play on the Varsity team as starter in the role of a defensive specialist. In this Volleyball season the team and myself had a great deal of success. Our team was the District Champion for 5-3A, as well as the State Champions for 3A in the State of New Mexico. In 2010 I matured a great deal as a player, teammate and leader. During this Varsity Volleyball season I came into the role of being a team leader, as well as the team Libero. Our team was the District Champions, as well as the State Champions for the second year in a row. I was selected as an All District Player, and as a player to the 3A 1st All State Team in the role of libero. In 2011 I have continued to be a leader of the Pojoaque Elkettes Volleyball Team. I am still the teams Libero and team captain, with great statistics and an even better athletic attitude. This year our team is the number one school in the State of New Mexico not only in our 3A class, but also over the larger 4 and 5A schools as well. My team has taken 3 tournaments so far this year, where I was recognized as the All Tournament player in the Pierda Vista Tournament. After the teams’ tournament win over the 4A and 5A schools in the Rio Rancho & Cleveland Volleybash Tournament both myself and my team continues to grow in hopes of winning another state title as an undefeated team.
I hope that my 2011 Volleyball season continues to be a success in the hopes that Colleges and Universities want me to represent their schools in this sport. I look forward to continuing in Volleyball beyond my High School years while also growing scholastically by getting a Bachelors degree. I welcome any questions that you may have of me. Thank you for your time, attention, and consideration.
